If you thought silent movies ended in the 1920s, you haven’t seen Mel Brooks’ hilarious “Silent Movie,” (made in 1976) in which a film director (played by Brooks) pitches a feature-length silent movie as a comeback to aid an ailing film studio. Desperate for a hit, the studio chief (Sid Caesar) gives Brooks and his cohorts (Marty Feldman and Dom DeLuise) the green light — but only if they can convince major celebrities to get on board.

The film, a loving tribute to classic Hollywood and the golden age of silent film, relies on physical humor and slapstick comedy rather than dialogue. And you can watch it in the cushy seats of the Sarasota Opera House, once a movie theater itself, as part of the “Classic Movies at the Opera House” series. Now all we need is a piano player…
Mel Brooks’ “Silent Movie” at the Sarasota Opera House, 61 N. Pineapple Ave., Sarasota. 7 p.m. (Run time 1 hour, 26 minutes). Tickets $12. 941-328-1300. sarasotaopera.org/summer-and-fall-2025-classic-movies-opera-house
