Welcome to ArtsBeat.org, where we hope you discover a new way to keep up with the arts in the Sarasota area.

ArtsBeat is a new, non-profit arts journalism website that has been designed to help fill a growing void in coverage of the region’s vibrant arts scene and to help develop the next generation of arts writers and critics.

It has been created by veteran arts journalists Jay Handelman and Carrie Seidman in collaboration with DreamLarge, SuncoastSearchlight.org and the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, who have helped us create a digital-first platform to deliver authoritative coverage of Sarasota’s broad range of performing, visual and cultural arts.

Each week, we will be producing in-depth features, opinion pieces and perspectives on arts news, as well as reviews and a video podcast talking about recent openings and what new performances and events are about to open. We also will send out a weekly newsletter (The Arts Brief) directly to your email inbox to help you keep up with our original content and arts-related stories published and produced by other news outlets in the area.

Our goal is to enhance the amount of arts coverage and make sure you have access to all of it.

We want to use this new platform to reinvigorate the conversation about arts and culture in compelling and fun ways with a fresh and creative approach.

We plan to draw on our many years of experience in the journalism field and our expertise in the arts to nurture a new generation of knowledgeable and articulate journalists who will help ensure a continued appreciation for our cultural landscape. We hope you’ll get to know and support them as you have us over the years.

Carrie Seidman, left, and Jay Handelman are the co-editors of ArtsBeat.org.

There are no paywalls on our website. Our stories will be available to everyone free of charge. To expand the reach of our work, we also are offering our stories to all the major media outlets in our area, allowing them to publish stories on their websites and in print publications or broadcast programs.

We welcome your financial support of our efforts. You may make tax-deductible contributions through The Gulf Coast Community Foundation, which has established the Arts Beat Fund to accept donations.

We hope you will be frequent visitors to our site, and we want you to share your stories and experiences with us. Don’t hesitate to share your feedback on our stories and other content.
